hgsubversion and externals

Not sure this is the right place, but I have an hgsubversion question.

I enabled the plugin, was able to do an initial pull using svn+http://.  This repo however is mostly made up of externals and no real local content at all.  I just did an hg pull to get the latest updates, and got nothing.

I am guessing that the pull did not go through the externals that are defined to pull updates from them.  Am I missing something?  Or are externals not checked out like I think they are?
