No, I want to make it easier for the user to go from the message
"abort: uncommitted changes" to discovering that they have a missing
file.

Because they couldn't figure out what the uncommitted change was...
they couldn't commit anymore. And they destroyed their repo and
started over.
Now you might find this amusing. But that's how we find usability
problems.
