Timed Out and WIndows and USB

Hi,
 I'm struggling to creat my first repository 'commit'. Having added 50+ files using Eclipse Mercurial I then ask to 'commit.' It churns through quite a few but comes back with error code fairly quickly about timing out. I am in Windows xp and the respository is on a USB card. Wondering if the latter is too slow.. seems odd though.
  Doing my steps inside eclipse.
  Please advise.
