version info unknown

Hello everybody,

At last mercurial was made part of the system at our institute, so I
don't have to maintain private installs anymore. But I noticed this:
$ hg --version
Mercurial Distributed SCM (version unknown)

Copyright (C) 2005-2008 [.....]

What can be the cause that the version is unknown? Could this
potentially be problematic enough that I need to report back to our
systemmanager?
