Yes; keeping the current behaviour is 100% backwards compatible,
changing it isn't. So that ain't gonna happen.
If we don't like the command then we shouldn't use it. If we want
another command then we can try to propose it. But the simplest solution
is to do what already works: use separate commands. (Which also makes it
hard to argue why a new command/option is needed.)
