bad protocol version identification

running gentoo with mercurial 1.1.2, apache 2.2.10, openssh-5.1_p1-r2

using ssh authentication

when i push to the repository, i get a "bad protocol version identification"
within my server logs.
the client gives me "abort: error: SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.1"

i can successfully ssh to the box via the same client

a noob, so i don't really know what this means. i've seen much documented on
ssh attacks, but i'm the one issuing the request.

any ideas are greatly appreciated!
