Shallow Clones?

I saw one of the major features I always felt mercurial lacked being put in
as an experimental feature, subrepos, which is great!

I guess the question now becomes, how about shallow clones? I'm mostly
curious to how progress on that front is going, I know someone had an
extension which at one point was attempting to implement it... but I don't
remember ever seeing that get finished?
