Temporary removal of parts of repo

This should work (I just tested it). 

But whenever you update, you'll get back all missing files, so it's likely not 
too convenient. 

Also there's the danger that you might by accident commit the removal. 

But whatever you do, you can always "backout" a mistake (as long as you 
abstain from history changing operations - you'd have to enable extensions to 
use those).
