Notify fails authorization with one of two accounts

hg1.3.1 / thg0.8.1 made no difference.  It does work with my gmail
account (with the @ in the login) but gmail also uses TLS.  I expect
to continue to use gmail for this application but if I could learn how
to debug this further I would like to.
