Ann: attic extension - just about ready for users

I think attic is now ready for use by the general population. If anybody 
runs into any problems with it please email me and I will get to it 
asap. If nobody finds any problems, I will be tagging it 1.0 at the end 
of the week.

If anybody is interested I would appreciate a code review (Python would 
not be my language of choice and I still feel not 100% comfortable with it).
