These two mails (as well as some of the other comments in this thread)
would make a really good start on a Basic Concepts page in the wiki
(the type of "reference card" material Skip mentions).

Also: I'd second the advice that people should avoid mentioning
extensions in replies to new users - getting the basic concepts clear
(and internalised) is usually enough to be getting to grips with at
first!
