hg convert from http Mercurial source

Hi, 

I just tried to hg convert the hg-stable repo

hg convert http://selenic.com/repo/hg-stable/

It says, it doesn't look like a Mercurial repo. 

But hg clone thinks otherwise.  

hg clone http://selenic.com/repo/hg-stable/

Is there a good reason for that, or did I just stumble on a bug?
