'activity' extension (also 'chart' extension)

Thomas and I have both been working on the same essential idea since his
initial request, though we went different directions on the rendering.
My take on the same goal (and derived from the 'churn' extension) is

To date mine worked against crew/tip and his worked against 1.0.x, but
last night mpm gave us a tip for working with either, so we should be
able to combine the counting portions of our extensions in the future
and just make the render path an option.
