Help with converting cvs repository (Gentoo portage tree)

HI, 

I just tried converting the Gentoo portage tree to Mercurial but wasn't 
successful. 

cvsps started up, didn't manage to detect the servers version, consumed about 
1.2GiB of ram for an hour or so and then didn't convert anything. 

What I did: 
$ cvs -d :pserver:anonymous at anoncvs.gentoo.org:/var/cvsroot co gentoo-x86
$ hg convert gentoo-x86

Do you have an idea how to do a successful conversion? 

Besides: That cvs repository is also available via rsync: 
rsync -rv rsync://anonvcs.gentoo.org/vcs-public-cvsroot/gentoo-x86/ gentoo-x86
