Just my personal experience:

Mercurial just worked for me from the beginning, and I was never surprised by
it, except by the fact that everything just worked (you seldom get that with
Computers).

Git bit me once too often, so that I switched to doing only basic tasks with
it (when I have to use it).
It didn't yet cost me my work, since when I realized I was on the verge of
breaking something really baldy I got a new clone and copied over the files I
had modified. But it cost me hours in trying to get things to work as I needed
them (most times ending with me getting a new clone, since I couldn't figure
out what I did wrong - and being told weeks later by a friend that I could
have solved that easily with command X).

Of Git I grew wary over many bad experiences.

With Mercurial on the other hand I enjoy trying new things, and I just enjoy
working.

So much for my personal experience,
I hope it helps you.

Best wishes,
Arne
