I use only defaults for bzr, since I don't use it in production. 

My hg might be bogged down a bit by too many enabled extensions, though 
(nothing which affects cloning, but color might slow the log - or might not). 

Why don't you do the test with the new repository format so we can compare the 
results? 

It's really as simple as running test.sh (and waiting some time).
