And now I found the limitation to that: If subdirectories in that cvs 
repository disappeared at some point, I won't be able to get them and my 
approach will miss some changesets. 

The subdir approach suffices for creating the code_swarms (first step), but 
not for doing a real conversion. 

So the question is back at: 

> Is there room for reducing the memory footprint, or is it already optimized
> to the maximum (so that it just needs to manage that much data)?
