 From what you wrote, it seems that FreeBSD become proprietary.
FreeBSD is always Open Source, and nobody is forcing you to buy
Apple Mac OS X.

I'm against Apple, but at least there is a valid alternative to Windows 
(and it's custom, non POSIX, API).
