.hgignore does not work for hg status

I notice this clause in the hg.1.txt:

 

  .hgignore::

      This file contains regular expressions (one per line) that describe file

      names that should be ignored by hg.

 

However, 'hg status' doesn't seem to respect .hgignore. Shouldn't it?
