In addition to the good mail from Randy I will add...

First of becoming a respected kernel maintainer does not come by
promotion but by example.
Lurk on linux-kernel for a while and when you get used to the
tone and the subjects try to be a bit involed in the parts
where you have interest.
Stay away from non-technical subjects btw. thats just waste of time.

Then when you see that people refer to you as the parallel port
guy you are the maintainer and it is time to update
MAINTAINERS if you did not do so already.
But do not expect to become accepted as maintainer over-night
it takes a bit to get there.

Patience and preservence is good - and thick skin helps too.
