looking for a project

HI ,
I am a kernel newbie. I have read a few books on the linux kernel , but I
want to try out  projects pertaining to the kernel, so that I can progress
in that respect. Can anyone suggest a project or perhaps direct me to an
existing one, so that I can make a useful contribution. Any help would be
appreciated
